Bate was appointed in command of the destroyer Cygnet on 16 July, 1912.[3]
Bate was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1913. [4]
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Staunch on 16 December, 1913.[5]

In August, 1915, Bate was appointed from Staunch for command of the new "M" Class destroyer Michael.[6]
Bate commanded the destroyer Michael of the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland.[7]
In 1917, Bate incurred severe displeasure by permitting the "loot" of provisions from the Swedish steamer S.S. Aspen as he helped salve her after she was damaged by UC 31 twenty miles east of the Orkneys.[8]
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Vivacious on 4 December, 1917.[9]
Bate was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1917.[10]
Interbellum
Bate was appointed to the icebreaker Sviatogor on 24 September, 1919, to assume command upon her commissioning. He left the ship to begin some unpaid time on 22 May, 1920.[11][12]
Bate was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Captain on 26 August, 1929.[13]
Bate was promoted to the rank of Acting Captain on 10 November, 1939.[14]
World War II
Bate was appointed in command of the training base H.M.S. Spartiate vice Boulton and as Maintenance Captain on the staff of Flag Officer in Command, Glasgow vice Priestley on 8 February, 1941. In 1944, command of Sherbrooke House was added to these duties, vice Neill, R.N.V.R..[15]
