H.M.S. Albatross (1898)
Pendant Number: D.32 (1914)
D.44 (Sep 1915)
D.02 (Jan 1918)[1]
Builder: John I. Thornycroft & Company[2]
Ordered: 1986-97 Programme[3]
Laid down: 27 Nov, 1896[4]
Launched: 19 Jul, 1898[5]
Commissioned: Jul, 1900[6]
Broken up: 1920[7]

H.M.S. Albatross was one of forty "C" class destroyers built for the Royal Navy — a "30 knotter".

She was built for £66,500, and failed to make her design speed of 32 knots, reaching just 31.35 knots despite developing 7,732 H.P. – more than her designed 7,500 H.P..[8]

Service

In reserve at Malta in December, 1905.[9]

In early 1908, she was in the Mediterranean.[10]

In mid-1911, she was in the Mediterranean.[11]

In February, 1915, Albatross collided with something in Immingham Dock. Lieutenant-Commander Ralph Neville was informed by the Admiral of Patrols that gross carelessness on his part had prompted him to precisely duplicate an earlier accident which had befallen the Earnest.[12]
