Carrington was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1912.[2]
In November, 1912, he was appointed to Inflexible as navigating officer. He was in her at the Battle of the Falklands and mentioned in despatches by Captain Phillimore, for he had "conned the ship with great care all day."[3]
On 18 February, 1916, Carrington was discharged from Inflexible and appointed to be Navigating Officer of King George V. He would fight in her at the Battle of Jutland later that year.[4]

In 1938, accepted an appointment as an Air Raid Warden after first checking that the Navy would not require him in the event of a mobilisation.[10]
