H.M.S. Pioneer was one of eleven Pelorus class cruisers completed for the Royal Navy between 1898 and 1901.

She was transferred to the Australian Navy in 1912, becoming H.M.A.S. Pioneer.

Service

On 30 January, 1903, Pioneer struck the destroyer H.M.S. Orwell during a night attack exercise in Corfu Channel, severing the bow of the destroyer. Fifteen men died, the majority being drowned in the destroyer's sinking forward section. Orwell was towed back to Corfu, eventually to have her bow replaced and to return to service.[7][8][9]

On 30 November, 1912, Pioneer's officers and crew were appropriated to recommission the third class protected cruiser Pyramus in Australia.[10]

Pioneer was re-commissioned at Sydney on 1 January, 1914. Presently, she began serving as a training ship for the Royal Australian Naval Reserve.[11]
