Service
On 30 January, 1903, Pioneer was struck by the destroyer H.M.S. Orwell in Corfu Channel. Fifteen men died, the majority being drowned in the destroyer's sinking bow section. Orwell was towed back to Corfu, eventually to have her bow replaced and to return to service.[7][8][9]
On 30 November, 1912, her officers and crew were appropriated to recommission the third class protected cruiser Pyramus in Australia.[10]
She re-commissioned at Sydney on 1 January, 1914. Presently, she began serving as a training ship for the Royal Australian Naval Reserve.[11]
