H.M.S. E 4 was one of fifty-seven "E" class submarines completed in Britain before and during the Great War.

Service

At the start of the Great War, E 4 was in the Eighth Submarine Flotilla. She was lost with all hands on 15 August, 1916 when she was conducting a submerged attack on E 41 when she collided with her target. She was raised and returned to service in mid-1917 with the Ninth Submarine Flotilla. At the end of 1918, she paid off.
