Vice-Admiral Robert Ross Turner, C.B., K.B.E., D.S.O., R.N. (13 October, 1885 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Turner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 March, 1906.[1]
Turner was appointed to Mercury for command of submarines on 20 April, 1908.[2]
Turner was appointed in command of the submarine C 15 on 26 February, 1914.[3]
Turner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 March, 1914.[4]
In September, 1914, he was appointed in command of the submarine D 3.[5]
Turner was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1916.[6]
Post-war
Turner was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1923.[7]
He was appointed in command of the light cruiser Conquest in December, 1924.
In 1926, Turner and Alexander Boyd Greig were thanked by the Admiralty for helping supply electrical power at dockside from submarines under his command during a general strike.[8]
Turner was appointed to the light cruiser Leander vice Fraser on 21 December, 1932 to oversee her completion and to take command upon her commissioning, which occurred on 27 February, 1933. He was reappointed on 7 June, 1933 and made Flag Captain to Rear Admiral P. L. H. Noble.[9]
Turner was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 September, 1935. On 13 September, he was appointed Admiral Superintendent, Portsmouth Royal Dockyard vice Kitson.[10]
Turner was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 May, 1939.[11]
World War II
Turner served in a number of capacities, including an appointment as Senior British Naval Officer, Greece, appointed in succession to the ailing Rear-Admiral Turle on 12 February, 1945, and holding the rank of Rear-Admiral while doing so.[12]
