William Goodenough Halliley
Commander (retired) William Goodenough Halliley (6 June, 1882 – 12 December, 1943) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Halliley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (Supplementary) on 1 April, 1913.[1]
Halliley was appointed to the new destroyer Nomad on 18 March 1916. She joined the Thirteenth Destroyer Flotilla and was lost at the Battle of Jutland. Halliley was presumed to have been killed, but he had been taken captive by the Germans. On 30 April 1918 he was transferred to Holland and was repatriated home on 16 November 1918.[2]
Halliley was appointed in command of the destroyer Norseman on 17 January, 1919.[3] He was tried by Court Martial in April 1919 for hazarding the ship after a collision with a trawler, but he was acquitted of the charge. On 24 October 1919 he was appointed to Hecla, additional for charge of a group of destroyers reduced to a C. & M. Party. In June 1920 he was appointed in command of Springbok for Reserve Fleet Exercises.[4]
Halliley was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 31 July 1920.[5]
In 1936 he was granted permission to proceed to Barbados.[6]
World War II
Granted total exemption from naval service, Halliley was employed by the Air Ministry. His death in late 1943 was listed under "Casualties".[7]
