Life & Career

The son of a Reverend A. C. Thynne of North Cornwall, Thynne gained seven months' time on passing out of Britannia in December, 1891. He was sent to Blake, additional, for three years on the North America station.[1]

Thynne was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1898.[2]

Thynne was appointed in command of the destroyer Mermaid on 11 September, 1906.

In December 1907, Mermaid and Express collided at night and Thynne was castigated for allowing the ships to converge, unlit, on a rendezvous at such a high speed.[3]

Thynne was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1910.[4]

On 23 December, 1911 Thynne appointed commander in the armoured cruiser Kent.[5]

On 10 November, 1913, Thynne was appointed in command of Lark.[6]

In August, 1914, Thynne was appointed to the battleship Agincourt as executive officer. While serving there, Thynne had a pet bull terrier named "Nick" and would fight in the Battle of Jutland. Thynne was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1916 and on 7 January, 1917, he was superseded in the battleship and in March was appointed in command of the minelayer Wahine.[7]

Post-War

"For valuable services in command of a Minelayer for eighteen months," Thynne was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (C.M.G.) on 24 March, 1919[8] before being superseded in Wahine in April, 1919.

On 13 January, 1920, Thynne was appointed in command of the depot ship Woolwich in Devonport, recommissioning her there on the 3rd of February and becoming Captain (D) of a flotilla.[9]

Thynne was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 3 July, 1922.

On 24 September, 1940 Thynne was given a temporary appointment as a Lieutenant R.N.V.R.. The service record we consulted does not specify further details of his career.
