H.M.S. Satellite was one of seven Satellite Class corvettes completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
Commissioned at Sheerness on 24 April, 1883 for service in the Pacific.[6]
In April, 1890, the Admiralty decided it would spend £12,000 for her refit at Sheerness.[7] In August, it was decided that she would be prepared again to serve on the China and Pacific stations, and that henceforth ships of her type would be captained by Commanders rather than Captains.[8] She was taken to sea on 25 March, 1891 to test her machinery, which had been thoroughly overhauled and repaired.[9]
In August 1891 as work continued, it was decided that her eight 6-in breech loading guns should be replaced by eight 5-in Mark II guns.[10] This decision would be mimicked in other ships in the wake of a disasterous accident which had occurred to a 6-in gun in the corvette Cordelia.[11] By the end of 1891, the plan had been altered: two 6-in guns "of the latest pattern" would be combined with six new 5-in guns.[12][13] Her extensive overhaul was completed in September 1892, and she underwent successful gunnery trials on 20 September.[14][15][16]
She finally commissioned on 9 January, 1894 to relieve the corvette Garnet on the Pacific Station.[17]
She was used as a drill ship after 1904.
