H.M.S. Garnet was one of six Emerald Class corvettes completed for the Royal Navy.

Service

Commissioned at Sheerness on 7 September, 1882.[6]

Re-commissioned at Malta on 1 November, 1890.[7]

Upon returning to England after nearly seven years' service on the Pacific Station in August, 1894, the ship was paid off into B Division of the Medway Fleet Reserve.[8]

Though it was considered possible to refit her for another term of foreign service, this was reconsidered in December 1894. She had by this point had four extended periods of foreign service.[9]
