H.M.S. Sandpiper was one of four Heron Class river gunboats completed for the Royal Navy.

There was a later gunboat Sandpiper assembled from sections in China, and served on the rivers there from 1934.

Service

She was loaded aboard the transport ship Glen Turret on 15 September 1898, to be conveyed, along with H.M.S. Woodcock to Hong Kong. The crews of the two vessels were to embark on a P & O vessel on 1 October.[5]

In early 1900 she went aground in the West River, China. She sustained damage to her bottom, but was successfully taken to Hong Kong for repairs.[6]

She was re-commissioned at Hong Kong on 13 March, 1907.[7]
