Commander (retired) Edward Eastwick-Field, R.N. (25 April, 1890 – 23 February, 1956) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Upon passing out of Britannia on 15 September, 1906 with one month's time, he was appointed to the battleship Prince of Wales. His early career was to feature several appointments in pre-dreadnoughts: Venerable in August 1907, Implacable in February 1909, Queen in April 1909 and Hindustan on 29 January, 1910. The only respite he would see was to be in T.B. 21 for the annual manoeuvres in the summer of 1910. He returned to battleships when appointed to the Formidable at the end of 1910.[1]

Eastwick-Field was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1912 while serving in the battleship Commonwealth of the Third Battle Squadron.[2]

He fell sick with bronchitis on 18 July, 1913. After recuperating on shore, he was found fit and ordered to rejoin Commonwealth on 15 August. Despite all this time in large ships and having nursed ambitions to become a navigating officer, Eastwick-Field would best serve the Navy in command of destroyers. This phase of his career arrived suddenly when he was told he would not be selected for a navigating course in late August 1913 and on 11 June, 1914 was appointed to the destroyer Lydiard. He would be in her when war broke out.[3]

Great War

Eastwick-Field left Lydiard when he was appointed to Laurel on 15 September, 1915. He left her for the Locust on 23 November, 1915.[4]

His first command was in T.B. 7, appointed 15 July, 1916. He was sick for about a week in March of 1917 and he left T.B. 3 on 7 May when he was appointed to supersede kenneth Helyar in command of the Acorn Class destroyer Alarm. He would ground her on 26 May 1917 and a COurt of Enquiry would find that he'd relied too strongly on his own dead-reckoning.[5]

Post-War

Eastwick-Field was appointed in command of the destroyer Hardy on 28 December, 1918.[6]

Eastwick-Field was appointed in command of the destroyer Scimitar on 21 June, 1920.[7]

Eastwick-Field was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1920.[8]

On 15 October, 1920, Eastwick-Field was appointed in command of the destroyer Ursa.[9]

On 22 February, 1922, he was appointed in command of a vessel whose name is hard to read, perhaps the sweeping sloop Camellia.[10]

He was superseded in his last sea-going command in the "R" Class destroyer Tempest on 5 August, 1931 and was appointed to the light cruiser Despatch on the 13th. On 5 August, 1932, after paying off and de-storing Despatch, he was sent to join Centurion. He was superseded in her on 7 November.[11]

Eastwick-Field was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 18 May, 1933.[12]

World War II

Eastwick-FIeld applied for re-entry into the navy in 1936 and in 1938 further informed them of his services being available. He was granted retrospective permission to join the International Board for non-Intervention in Spain on Observer II later that year.

On 28 September, 1939 he was temporarily appointed to the Sea Transport Cutter Southampton. On 14 October, he was made Deputy Assistant Censor, Information Section vice Fisher, temporary.

On 18 June 1941 he was appointed to work with the D.O.D. (H), temporary, vice Whitehead.[13]
