Life & Career

The son of Major H. Craufurd of Guard Depot, Caterham, Surrey. His early evaluations in the Navy indicate he was physically strong.

Craufurd was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1911.[2]

Craufurd was appointed to Talbot from 1 March, 1912 to 20 December, 1912 when he was appointed to Devonshire from 21 December, 1912. He would remain in her through 1915.

Craufurd left Devonshire when he was appointed to Tiger from 5 January, 1916. He was her executive officer at the Battle of Jutland and was recommended for promotion for his service in the action. His promotion to the rank of Captain was dated 30 June, 1916.[3]

Craufurd was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Hyacinth on 30 November, 1917.[4]

In June, 1919, Craufurd was appointed in command of the light cruiser Birmingham.[5] In November, the Admiralty would express its displeasure with a Court of Enquiry into "a refusal of duty by certain of ship's company" in September.

Craufurd was lent to the Royal Australian Navy for two years from 6 January, 1923, becoming Captain Superintendent of Sydney Dockyard. The appointment lasted until 15 July, 1925 at which time he undertook a year of Technical and War Courses. On 8 July, 1925, he was appointed Captain in Charge and King's Harbour Master, Portland. This appointment ended when Craufurd was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 15 January, 1928 and was placed on the Retired List the following day.[6]

Craufurd was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 24 September, 1932.[7]
