Captain (retired) Charles Cutlack Ennals, (4 June, 1880 – 21 May, 1951) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of a surgeon.[1]

Ennals was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 July, 1901.[2]

After eight months in command of the destroyer Opossum, Ennals went to France to study the language for four months.[3]

Ennals was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 July, 1909.[4]

During the Annual Manoeuvres of 1912, Ennals served on the staff of Admiral Jellicoe, but in 1913, he was noted as being "plodding" and "unprepossessing".[5]

When war broke out, Ennals was working in Intelligence. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 13 December, 1914 and remained in Intelligence until being appointed to H.M.S. Collingwood, additional, for navigating duties and as Interpreter in German. Before the end of the war, he was re-appointed as her navigator (not additional), and as Interpreter in German and French.[6]

On 6 March 1919 he left the ship to re-qualify in navigation at H.M.S. Dryad.[7]

With his final evaluation noting his exceptional leadership, Ennals was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Captain on 9 August, 1926.[8]

World War II

Ennals worked in censorship on the books of Maidstone and then in some other capacity at Pembroke Royal Dockyard before being reverted to the Retired List in 1942.[9]
