The Battle of Port Arthur, the first naval battle of the Russo-Japanese War, began when the Japanese launched a surprise night torpedo attack on moored Russian vessels in their harbour on 8–9 February 1904, scoring three effective hits which disabled two battleships and a cruiser. The battle continued the next morning when the major vessels engaged in a gun action near the mouth of the harbour, but the action was not decisive.
