The Battle of Tsushima, fought between May 27–28, 1905, saw the annihilation of the large Russian Baltic Fleet at the hands of a Japanese force under the command of Admiral Tōgō. Admiral Zinovy Rozhestvensky's defeat elevated Japan unmistakably to the ranks of modern nations capable of exerting themselves in naval contests.
