The Battle of the Yellow Sea, fought on 10 August, 1904, saw a sallying Russian force under Admiral Wilgelm Vitgeft thrown into confusion when a Japanese shell killed him and sent his flagship, the battleship Retvizan careening off course.
In light of the devastation faced in the following year at the Battle of Tsushima, the Russians were fortunate to recover and not suffer a greater calamity.
