John Uniacke Penrose Fitzgerald
Rear-Admiral John Uniacke Penrose Fitzgerald, C.B. (27 July, 1888 – 11 December, 1940) served in the Royal Navy. He was the son of Charles C. P. FitzGerald and brother of Robert F. U. P. Fitzgerald.[1]
Life & Career
Fitzgerald was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1909.
Fitzgerald was appointed to Collingwood as torpedo officer, qualified as an interpreter in French, on 6 January, 1914.[2] He fought in her at the Battle of Jutland,[3] and reported, afterward, that he was able to observe the battle turn away of the German fleet from his position in the T.C.T..[4] Fitzgerald was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1917.
Fitzgerald was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1921.
Fitzgerald was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1929.
Fitzgerald was appointed in command of the light cruiser Caledon in December, 1929.
World War II
Fitzgerald was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 5 January, 1940 and was placed on the Retired List the following day.
He was assigned to the Liverpool Convoy Pool in the rank of Commodore, Second Class on 10 October, 1940.
He was presumed killed on 11 December, 1940 when S.S. Rotorua was torpedoed by U 96.
