H.M.S. Marathon was one of five second class protected cruisers of the Medea class completed for the Royal Navy in 1889 and 1890.
Service
Commissioned at Portsmouth on 16 September, 1890.[6]

- Captain John G. Jones, 18 July, 1889[7] (for Annual Manoeuvres of 1889)
- Captain George W. Hill, 16 September, 1890[8] – 20 February, 1894
- Captain Robert B. Maconochie, 1 January, 1894[9] – 22 April, 1896 (invalided due to climate-related debility)
- Acting Commander Henry H. Bruce, 22 April, 1896[10] – 1897[11] (temporary, in Maconochie's absence)
