H.M.S. G 5 was one of fourteen "G" class submarines completed in Britain during the Great War, intended primarily to hunt German U-boats.
Service
By late 1920, she was one of six "G" class submarines in reserve at Portsmouth as the "L" group under the collective command of Lieutenant Humphrey G. Veale, tender to Dolphin.[7]
Captains
Dates of appointment are provided when known.
- Lieutenant-Commander Fitzroy H. D. Byron, 3 December, 1915[8] – 27 July, 1917[9]
- Lieutenant-Commander (emergency) Gilbert E. Venning, 15 October, 1918 – 25 February, 1919
- Lieutenant R.N.R. in Command Douglas R. Attwood, 18 June, 1918 – 24 November, 1918 (died in command)
- Lieutenant-Commander Lancelot V. Donne, 25 November, 1918[10] – 14 September, 1920[11]
- Lieutenant-Commander Robert N. Stopford, 23 November, 1918[12] – 21 June, 1919[13]
- Lieutenant in Command Humphrey G. Veale, 28 August, 1920[14][15] – 21 February, 1921[16] (and of 5 other "G" class boats)
Venning's data seems a bit off. Donne's also seems to conflict, and the submarine name is not entirely clear in his Service Record.
