H.M.S. Philomel was one of nine cruisers of the Pearl class completed for the Royal Navy in 1891 and 1892.
Service
Paid off at Devonport on 1 March, 1898[6] to be refitted for foreign service.[7]
Philomel relieved the second class protected cruiser Venus on the Mediterranean Station in February, 1908, allowing Venus to join the Atlantic Fleet.[8]
Philomel re-commissioned at Aden on 4 October, 1911 for service in the East Indies.[9]
She left Colombo on 14 October, 1912, bound for Bombay.[10]
Philomel arrived at Colombo under the command of Commander George Norman Ballard on 29 September 1913, and left on 2 October for Singapore.[11]
The cruiser re-commissioned "abroad" on 20 April, 1917.[12]
She re-commissioned in Wellington, New Zealand on 1 March, 1921. By March 1925 she was serving as a training and depot ship at Auckland,[13] serving there through at least mid-1937.[14]
