H.M.S. Penelope was one of four Arethusa Class light cruisers completed for the Royal Navy.
Construction & Service
As the new cruiser was nearing completion in June 1936, it was announced that Captain Gerard Walter Trevelyan Robertson would be first in her command.[5] However, he died in a motor vehicle accident on 12 August and so FitzRoy Evelyn Patrick Hutton was designated as their first captain.
Commissioned on 12 November, 1936 for service with the Third Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean Fleet.[6]
