Admiral SIR John Frederick Ernest Green, K.C.M.G., C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (8 August, 1866 – 30 October, 1948) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Early Life & Career
Green was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 January, 1890.[1]
Green was specially promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1901, for services in China.[2]
Captain
He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1906.[3]
Great War
Green was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 September, 1917, vice Stoddart,[4] and was appointed Senior Naval Officer on the Clyde on 20 October, 1917.[5] On 30 October, 1918, he was appointed Rear-Admiral Commanding in the White Sea, with his flag in H.M.S. Glory.[6]
Post-War
On 1 April, 1922, Green was appointed Commanding Officer, Coast of Scotland and Admiral Superintendent of Rosyth Dockyard.[7]
He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 November, 1922, vice Halsey.[8] On 1 January, 1925, he was placed on the Retired List at his own request.[9]
Retirement
While shooting in Fife on 31 October, 1925 with fellow retired admiral Edward H. Moubray and Admiral Sir Henry Oliver, Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet, Green wheeled for a woodcock, fired and shot one barrel into Oliver, fortunately not seriously injuring him. According to Oliver, Green had accidentally shot someone before, and acquired a reputation for doing so.[10]
Green was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 August, 1927.[11]
