H.M.S. Arun was one of 36 destroyers of the "River" class.
Service
On 13 August, 1904, Arun collided with Decoy in night exercises off the Scilly Islands, sinking the other destroyer. After two Court Martials held on 23 and 30 August, Commander Tyrwhitt of Arun was found to blame for hazarding the two vessels.[8][9][10]
Arun was commissioned for steam trials at Devonport on 27 September after having her collision-damaged bow repaired.[11]
In late 1905, Arun was in commission on the China Station.[12]
By January, 1907 she had returned to Britain and was part of the Channel Fleet's Third Flotilla.[13]
In early 1910 she had joined the Second Destroyer Flotilla.[14]
In mid-1913, she was doing patrol work with the Ninth Destroyer Flotilla.[15]
In April 1914, she was tender to Iron Duke. For the Test Mobilisation on the eve of war, she was intended to join the Ninth Destroyer Flotilla but by September she found herself as one of the twelve "Rivers" attached to the battle squadrons in Home and Atlantic Waters – the force that would presently be dubbed the Grand Fleet. She remained so disposed until some time in March, 1915 and was then moved to the Portsmouth Local Defence Flotilla.
In September, 1917, Arun left Portsmouth to join the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla, which was under the overall command of Admiral Commanding, East Coast of England.
Arun returned to Portsmouth in January, 1918 when she joined the First Destroyer Flotilla.
