The Ogilvy Medal was awarded annually, at the discretion of the Admiralty, to the Officer who claimed first place in the examination to qualify for Torpedo Lieutenant.
It was instituted in 1912 in memory of the late Captain Frederick Charles Ashley Ogilvy, R.N. who died on the 18th December, 1909 from typhoid fever, while in command of H.M.S. Natal.
The medals were funded through dividends arising from a sum of about £240 given by Royal Navy officers and also certain friends and relatives of Captain Ogilvy. Any balance that remains after payment of expenses may be handed over to the winner of the medal at the discretion of the Admiralty.[1]
