Vice-Admiral (retired) Basil Hew Fanshawe, C.B.E., (18 May, 1868 – 11 August, 1929) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

Fanshawe was born at the Cape of Good Hope, the son of a Lieutenant General.

On 1 April, 1891, Fanshawe was promoted to Lieutenant.[1]

On 31 December, 1903, Fanshawe was promoted to Commander.[2]

On 30 June 1910, Fanshawe was promoted to Captain.[3]

Fanshawe was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Royal Arthur in October 1911.

Fanshawe was appointed in command of the light cruiser Bristol on 3 January, 1913.[4]

Great War

He assumed command of the armoured cruiser Sutlej in February of 1916.

Post-War

Fanshawe was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 25 February, 1921 and placed on the Retired List at his own request the following day.

Fanshawe was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 7 July, 1926.
