Service

Commissioned at Devonport on 24 October, 1911. In early 1913, she was attached with the Third Battle Squadron, but was ordered to join the Second Light Cruiser Squadron in July.[7]

On 1 September 1913, now attached to the Third Light Cruiser Squadron, she paid off at Devonport, to recommission the following day for service on the East Indies Station, drawing a fresh crew from the depot.[8]

During the early part of the war, Dartmouth was part of the Mediterranean Fleet.

In June 1915, Dartmouth was made part of the British Adriatic Squadron – a composite force of battleships and light cruisers based on Taranto and Brindisi and tasked with keeping the Austro-Hungarian Navy from leaving the confined waters of the Adriatic Sea.

Dartmouth under the command of Captain Albert Percy Addison and Bristol were part of the Allied naval force that sortied from Brindisi in the Battle of the Strait of Otranto on 14-15 May, 1917. Dartmouth was damaged by several shell hits in the indecisive and confused action before being torpedoed and seriously damaged by the German UC 25 at 1.30pm. She was towed back to harbour for repairs.

Dartmouth was fitted with a director in February, 1918. This alteration required her pole mast to be replaced with a tripod mast for greater rigidity.[9]

She recommissioned at Gibraltar in March, 1919.[10]

She paid off into Dockyard Control on 26 September, 1923.[11]

The ship re-commissioned at Portsmoputh on 1 April, 1927.[12]

Dartmouth was commissioned at Portsmouth on 29 December, 1928.[13]
