Lieutenant-Commander Arthur Gerald Onslow, D.S.C., R.N. (13 May, 1885 – 1 June, 1916) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Major Onslow of the Royal Engineers, Arthur Onslow was born in Roorkee, India.
Captain Stokes of H.M.S. Eclipse recorded in January, 1903 that Onslow was "troublesome at times" and "inclined to be self-opinionated."
Onslow next served in Highflyer and Hyacinth. He was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross on 6 September 1904 for service in the Somaliland Expedition.
Onslow was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1906.
Onslow was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 18 on 13 February, 1911.[1]
Onslow was appointed in command of the destroyer Kestrel on 14 August, 1913.[2]
Onslow was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1914.
Onslow commanded the destroyer Onslaught at the Battle of Jutland as an element of the Twelfth Destroyer Flotilla.[3] He was mortally wounded in the night action and died of his wounds at 12.30pm on 1 June, ten hours after being wounded.
