Richard Lloyd Hamer
Captain Richard Lloyd Hamer, D.S.O., R.N. (Retired) (13 January, 1884 – 16 December, 1951) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Early Career
Hamer was appointed in command of the destroyer Kestrel on 1 April, 1913.[1]
On 13 September, 1916, Hamer was appointed in command of the destroyer Rowena.[2].
H.M. destroyer Rowena collided with H.M. destroyer Rigorous in 1918. Hamer’s record is endorsed, “N.L48105/18 Enquiry into collision between ‘Rigorous’ and ‘Rowena,’ informed that he hazarded both ships, that method of obtaining the mails was unseamanlike, warned for future, no further action.”
Shortly after being appointed in command of Torch, Hamer was sent ashore to hospital on 14 December, 1921.[3]
He was placed on the Retired List with effect from 2 February 1923.
Distinguished Service Order
Recalled to service, he was given command of the yacht Viva II on 9 September, 1939, on commissioning.
On 16 October, 1940 he was appointed in command of the Armed Merchant Cruiser Bulolo, and granted the acting rank of Captain whilst holding this appointment.
Hamer was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in December 1940, "for courage and resource in recent successful actions against Enemy Submarines."[4]
Subsequent Career
On 27 January 1944 he was appointed to H.M.S. Pembroke, additional, to continue serving in the acting rank of Captain, and on 7 March 1944 he was appointed to H.M.S. Proserpine, additional, as Naval Officer-in-charge, Thurso, to continue serving in the acting rank of Captain.
He was dispersed on 29 November 1945, and released from the Fleet on 24 January 1946. The following day he reverted to the Retired List.
