H.M.S. Royal Oak was one of eight Royal Sovereign class battleships completed for the Royal Navy in 1893-94. She was sold shortly before the Great War, and a modern dreadnought-type battleship was launched in that same year.

Service

Royal Oak completed her fitting out under the direction of Commander (N) Robert N. Ommanney.[8]

In October – November 1898, the ship became one of the first in the Royal Navy to receive torpedoes fitted for gyroscopes, drawn from the Portsmouth Depot. Though there were four torpedoes, only two gyros were initially supplied:[9]

As of 1901, while serving in the Mediterranean, she was slated to receive a "1 to 52" W/T set.[10]

On 20 August, 1913, the ship left Devonport in tow of the dreadnought Bellerophon for the Motherbank to await disposal.[11]
