Captain (retired) Algernon John Hotham, (28 April, 1863 – 10 February, 1913) served in the Royal Navy in the years before the Great War.

Life & Career

The son of the Reverend Frederick Harry Hotham, and grandson of Sir Henry Hotham, Vice-Admiral of the Red.[1]

Hotham was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1886 as he ended a single year's appointment as navigating officer in the gunboat Cockchafer.[2]

Hotham was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1899. Later that year, he took up duties as navigating commander in the gunvessel Curlew, then operating with the Home Fleet. The following years would find him acting in the same role in, among others, Blanche from late 1890, Sirius from March 1892 and Grafton from October 1895.[3]
