Rear-Admiral Charles Gordon Brodie, R.N. (19 January, 1884 – March 1964)[1] was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Charles Brodie was the son of the iron founder George Gordon Brodie of Birmingham. He entered the Royal Navy with the September 1898 intake term of Britannia, scoring 2590 marks on his entrance examination to finish just behind his twin brother, Theodore Stuart Brodie, being seventh of sixty-six candidates accepted for that term.[2] Both would go on to become submariners.

Charles Brodie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 19 July, 1904.[3]

Brodie was lucky to be just one of three men to survive the ramming and loss of C 11 by the steamer Eddystone on the night of 14 July, 1909, four and a half miles off Haisboro Light off Cromer.[4][5] Brodie would later be awarded the Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal and Certificate for saving the life of Lieutenant Geoffrey Robert Sladen Watkins.[6]

Brodie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 19 July, 1912.[7]

Brodie was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Thames on 1 January, 1913.[8]

Charles would lose his brother, Theodore, when the submarine he was commanding, E 15, was lost in the Dardanelles on 17 April, 1915.

Brodie was promoted to the rank of Commander on 28 June, 1916.[9]

Post-War

Brodie was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1922.[10]

On September 1931, he was superseded in command of the heavy cruiser Berwick by Cecil Nugent Reyne.[11]

Brodie was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 3 August, 1934 and placed on the Retired List the next day in accordance with Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[12]
