H.M.S. Topaze was the first of four third class cruisers of the "Gem" class completed in 1904 and 1905.
Service
The Topaze was launched on 23 July 1903, christened by Miss Annie Laird.[8]
A navigating party took her from Devonport to Birkenhead in November 1904, conducting a 24-hour full power trial en route.[9]
Assigned to the Channel Fleet, she left Portland for Sheerness on 30 November 1905 under the command of Commander Vivian Henry Gerald Bernard.[10]
On 22 October 1906 she arrived at Chatham Dockyard under the command of Henry Blackett, to refit and re-commission with a new crew.[11]
She left Cromarty on 29 July 1907.[12]
She arrived at Chatham on 4 December 1907 for her annual refit.[13]
In mid-1913, Topaze was serving with Third Fleet.[14]
She paid off at Portsmouth on 7 October 1919.[15]
