H.M.S. Tauranga was one of nine cruisers of the Pearl class completed for the Royal Navy in 1891 and 1892.
She was originally named Phoenix, but was renamed on 2 April, 1890.
Service
Commissioned at Devonport on 27 January, 1891.[6]
In June 1906, she was listed for sale at a July 10th Portsmouth auction of "Obsolete War Vessels and Other Craft" as "Lot 2". Sisters Katoomba and Phoebe were also being sold.[7]
