Captain (retired) Harold Victor Dundas (10 February, 1877 – 3 January, 1942) was an officer in the Royal Navy who commanded the destroyer Ossory at the Battle of Jutland.

Life & Career

Dundas was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1899.[1]

Dundas was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the destroyer Albatross on 14 October, 1905.[2]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Boyne on 11 October, 1907.[3]

On 18 June, 1908, he was reported to have a broken leg and would require about a month to recuperate.[4]

Dundas was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1912.[5]

Harpy collided with the light cruiser Caroline while under his command, and he was found to have committed an error in passing too near the cruiser.[6]

Dundas was appointed in command of the destroyer Cameleon on 9 October, 1914.[7]

He was captain of the destroyer Ossory at the Battle of Jutland, where she operated with the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla.[8]

In September, 1916 Dundas was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Grenville.

In November, 1917, Captain Sutton wrote that Dundas was "capable & has ship in good order, but inclined to be a bully and to blame those under him for his own mistakes."[9]

Post-War

On 19 October 1922, Dundas was informed that he would not be offered further employment upon expiration of his present appointment.[10]

Dundas was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Captain on 16 November, 1923.[11]
