Service
Swordfish was commissioned at Chatham on 6 January, 1899 by Lieutenant and Commander Alan Cameron Bruce to take the place of Mallard in the Medway Instructional Flotilla.[9]
In mid-1913, she was at Malta.[10] In November, she was ordered to return to England,[11] apparently being entrusted to Chief Gunner Michael Horrigan for the voyage.
