Lieutenant-Commander THE HONOURABLE Byron Plantagenet Cary, D.S.O., Baronet (25 January, 1887 – 16 September, 1917) was a submarine officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Cary was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1908.[1] On 1 May, 1909, he was appointed to Mercury for instruction in submarines. On 10 September, 1909 Cary was appointed in command of C 30.[2]
Cary was next appointed in command of the submarine A 11 on 7 December, 1911. He was appointed in command of the submarine C 10 on 1 June, 1914 when his second successive appointment in A 11 ended.[3]
Cary served in command of H 10 from August, 1915 until July of 1916, during which time he conducted six patrols after which he was appointed in command of the new G 9, in which he would conduct fifteen patrols as part of the Tenth Submarine Flotilla. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1916.[4]
Cary and all but one of his crew died when G 9 was rammed and sunk by Pasley in error on 16 September, 1917[5] after G 9 had mistaken the destroyer for a U-boat. Cary was posthumously awarded a D.S.O. for arduous service in command of submarines, gazetted 2 November, 1917. His Badge and Warrant for the award were forwarded to his father, the Right Honorable (Twelfth) Viscount Falkland on 11 January, 1918.[6]
