H.M.S. Encounter was one of two Challenger class cruisers completed in 1904 and 1905.

Service

She spent her first six years in Royal Navy service in the Australia Station before being transferred to the Royal Australian Navy as H.M.A.S. Encounter on 1 July, 1912.[7]

Encounter was the first ship in the fledgling navy to fire in anger when she bombarded Toma Ridge on 14 September, 1914..
