Vice-Admiral Wilfrid Nunn, C.B., C.M.G., C.S.I., D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (10 December, 1874 – 7 April, 1956) was an officer in the Royal Navy who would distinguish himself in riverine operations on the Tigris during the Great War.

Life & Career

Nunn gained five months' time on passing out of Britannia in July 1889. He was appointed to the Northumberland in the Channel Squadron.

On 14 January, 1896 Nunn was appointed to Goldfinch on the Australia Station as navigator. Nunn was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1896 and remained in Goldfinch until 22 December 1899.[1]

Nunn was navigating officer in Sybille from February to August 1900, to Gladiator for the annual manoeuvres of 1900, then to Vindictive until 7 January, 1904 before finally appointed navigating officer in the battleship Cornwallis on 9 February, 1904.[2]

While serving in Cornwallis, Nunn was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1907.[3] On 11 January, 1908, he left Cornwallis for an appointment as navigating officer in Powerful on the Australia Station.

Nunn left Powerful in early 1911 and returned to England in S.S. Makura, arriving home on 29 April to begin some time at Hydrographic Department and the Royal Naval War College.

On 23 October 1912, Nunn was given his first command, that of the sloop Espiegle on the East Indies Station.

The Senior Naval Officer, Persian Gulf mentioned Nunn for his zeal and ability in a report about operations against the Turks at Shatt-el-Arab. He was again mentioned in relation to the capture of Kurmch (Khorramshahr?), where he exhibited great coolness under fire. Nunn was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1914.[4]

In 1915, Nunn was made S.N.O., Mesopotamia from Fas northward. By April, 1916, he was mentioned three times in despatches for services in Mesopotamia.

On 5 May, 1917 Nunn left Basra for Bombay in S.S. Edarana (?). He then pushed off from there on the 26th for Port Said, arriving on 16 June. His services were brought to notice by the Commander-in-Chief, Mesopotamia as deserving special mention. He was accordingly invested with a C.M.G. and D.S.O. for his services in command of the Flotilla on the Tigris from December 1916 to March 1917.[5]

In July 1917, Nunn was appointed in command of the light cruiser Aurora.

Post-War

Nunn was appointed in command of the new light cruiser Curlew on 28 November, 1917.[6]

Nunn was appointed as Coast Guard Captain on the Staff of the Commander-in-Chief Coast of Scotland and was given command of the Coast Guard of the Rosyth Area in June, 1921. On 5 May 1922 he was made Commanding Officer of the Coast of Scotland Coast Guard. He held this station until August, 1923.[7]

After some Technical and War Courses, Nunn was appointed in command of the battleship Ramillies when she returned to England in April 1924. Superseded in command of Ramillies on 8 July, 1925, Nunn took Part II of the Senior Officers' Technical Course and then was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 12 August, 1925.[8]

Placed on the Retired List for non-service on 12 February, 1928, Nunn was subsequently promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List 8 May, 1930.[9]
