Staff Engineer was a commissioned rank of the Civil Branch and Engineer Branch in the Royal Navy.

History

The rank of Staff Engineer was created by Order in Council of 17 February, 1886, to be held by officers with 4 years' seniority as Chief Engineer. They ranked with Lieutenants of over eight years' seniority.[1]

The rank of Staff Engineer was abolished under the terms of the Order in Council of 29 June, 1900, all officers holding that rank at that time retaining it until promoted to the rank of Fleet Engineer.[2]

Under the provisions of the Order in Council of 28 March, 1903, all Staff Engineers became Engineer Lieutenants.[3]
