Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino
Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino (or Technical Establishment of Trieste) was an Austro-Hungarian shipbuilder tracing its roots to a private shipyard founded at San Marco, west of Trieste, in 1838. In 1857, acquisition of an engine concern and another shipyard created the company that would be named STT.
History
Upon outbreak of war, STT had just produced modern battleships for Austria-Hungary and was renamed Austriawerft for the duration. However, further battleship and later submarine construction projects fizzled on the ways in the face of the loss of skilled Italian labour.
After the war, the company and its territory was taken over by Italy.
In 1929, the firm merged with Cantiere Navale Triestino to form Cantieri Riuniti dell' Adriatico, which would specialise in submarines, building almost half of the Italian Navy's undersea forces used in World War II.
