N° 2 was a torpedo boat completed for the French Navy in 1876.

Construction

N° 2 was laid down at Arsenal de Rochefort on 21 September, 1875. Her design was by sous-ingéneur de 3re classe Jean Baron, along the lines of the March 1875 proposals of the Commission Permanente des Défenses Sous-Marines. She was intended for defensive work inside harbors or river estuaries.[12]

Service

N° 2 began trials on 31 July, 1876. She soon proved unsuccessful, lacking stability, capable of only 11 knots, and suffering from excessive and constant wear on her boilers. She was finally accepted by the Marine in November 1878 and used in the development of sous-ingéneur de 2e classe Desdouits' spar torpedo design.[13]

N° 2 was stricken in December 1880. Subsequently she was renamed Vergeroux and served as a yardcraft for Rochefort's coastal defenses, and a tug between 1896 and 1899. Vergeroux was condemned in May 1899 and presumably disposed of afterwards. In her entire career, she never left Rochefort.[14][15]
