John Corbett
Admiral SIR John Corbett, K.C.B. (15 July, 1822 – 10 December, 1893) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Corbett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 4 May, 1846.
Gazetted for "most gallant conduct at the capture of Lagos", and invalided due to his wounds, Corbett was promoted to the rank of Commander on 20 February, 1852.[1]
Corbett was appointed in command of the brig-sloop Wolverine on 9 May, 1854. He would be reprimanded by Court Martial on 26 November 1855 for the wrecking and loss of the Wolverine.[2]
Corbett was promoted to the rank of Captain on 10 August, 1857.
On 19 October 1861, the Russian government conveyed its tanks for the assistance Corbett rendered to the Arcona in China.
Corbett was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 20 April, 1875.[3]
Corbett was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 2 August, 1879.[4]
On 30 October, 1884 he hoisted his flag as Commander-in-Chief, the Nore. On 1 July, 1885 he struck his flag in Duncan on being superseded.[5]
In 7 April, 1885 Corbett was promoted to Admiral.[6]
On 15 July 1887, Corbett was retired on account of age. He would die at 44 Roland Gardens, London, from sarcoma of his abominal glands.[7]
