James Andrew Gardiner Troup

Vice-Admiral SIR James Andrew Gardiner Troup, K.B.E., C.B., Royal Navy (7 March, 1883 – 11 May, 1975) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

Troup was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 September, 1903.

Troup was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 September, 1911.

Troup was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1916.

In January, 1919, he was appointed executive officer in Royal Sovereign. He would be superseded on 1 May, 1920.

Troup was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1922.

Troup was appointed to President on 1 February, 1923, for service in the Admiralty, and as Head of Tactical Section from 15 February.

He was appointed Captain of the Portsmouth Navigation School on 17 December, 1928.

Troup was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 16 January, 1935, vice im Thurn. In June his appointment as Director of Naval Intelligence (D.N.I.) was announced. He was appointed to the Admiralty, dated 26 August, and his appointment as D.N.I. was dated 9 September.

World War II

Troup was appointed Flag Officer in Charge, Glasgow vice Rear Admiral James D. Campbell on 19 February, 1940. He remained in that post throughout the war and returned to civilian life in early 1946.

Troup was a contributor to The Naval Review under his initials, J.A.G.T.
