Hugh Dundas Hamilton
Hugh Dundas Hamilton (16 August, 1882 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Hamilton was born in Kensington and was raised by his mother, Adelaide.[1]
Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1904.[2]
Hamilton was appointed as gunnery officer of battleship Bellerophon on 10 April, 1912. He would remain in her into the final year of the war.[3]
Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1912.[4]
The Great War
As gunnery officer in Bellerophon, Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1915.[5]
He married Marion Edith Cloete on 24 June, 1916. He was superseded in Bellerophon on 31 January, 1918. On 1 March, he was appointed Flag Commander to Admiral Sturdee, then serving as Commander-in-Chief at the Nore.[6]
Post-War
Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1920.[7]
On 10 January, 1922, he was lent to the New Zealand government and appointed Chief Staff Officer of the Commodore Commanding the New Zealand Station. He was superseded in January, 1924.[8]
Hamilton was appointed in command of the light cruiser Caradoc in 20 August, 1924. On 14 June, 1926, he was appointed in temporary command of Third Cruiser Squadron, being superseded in that role on 12 August, 1926.[9]
Hamilton was appointed in command of the battleship Royal Oak in March, 1928.[10]
Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 4 January, 1933 and was placed on the Retired List on 5 January in accordance with Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[11]
World War II
On 24 August, 1939 Hamilton was appointed to Malabar, additional, as Commodore of Convoy to serve as a Commodore, Second Class, R.N.R.. In mid-December, he moved to the London Convoy Pool, but was reverted to the Retired List on the 27th. He was trotted out again in 1940, and on 25 September, placed in command of H.M.S. Trelawney, serving in the rank of Captain. In November, 1943 he was reverted to Retired Pay. In the first half of 1944, he worked sporadically, being the Admiralty Representative and Chief Naval Advisor to the Postal and Telegraph Censorship board. Hamilton was ultimately reverted to the Retired List for the final time on 18 June, 1944.[12]
