Horace Geoffrey Norman
Vice-Admiral (retired) Horace Geoffrey Norman, C.B., C.B.E. (25 May, 1896 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Norman joined the navy as part of a special emergency term taken into the Training Establishment in September 1914. He passed out on New Year's Day, 1915, and was appointed to the super-dreadnought battleship Queen Elizabeth, a ship he would command 28 years later. On 22 June 1917 he went to the light cruiser Caledon. Just on month later, he took a month's instruction in Torpedo Control at H.M.S. Vernon.[1]
From August 1917 he commenced a year in the destroyer Tancred, eventually being made an Acting Lieutenant. From 21 August 1918 through the end of the war, he was in the destroyer Tilbury.[2]
Norman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1918.[3]
Norman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1926.[4]
Norman was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1932.[5]
Norman was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1938.[6]
World War II
Norman was appointed in command of the battleship Queen Elizabeth in April, 1943.
Norman was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 8 July, 1947.[7]
Norman was placed on the Retired List at the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 December, 1950.[8]
