Herbert William Wyld

Captain Herbert William Wyld, D.S.O., R.N., Retired (4 June, 1882 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Wyld was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1903. In January 1904, Captain Paget would note that Wyld had demonstrated great aptitude in navigation.

Wyld was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 35 on 4 August, 1909.

Wyld was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1911.

Wyld was appointed in command of the destroyer Pincher on 20 September, 1912.

Wyld was admitted to Queensferry Hospital on 26 January, 1913 for a fractured rib on his left side. He was found fit on 10 February. Captain (D), Third Destroyer Flotilla Carey evaluated him that month as having a poor physique and lacking force of character. On 6 May, 1913 he was tried by Court Martial for stranding Pincher. Default was proved and Wyld received a reprimand. Though his ship performed well in the 1913 gunlayers' tests, the new Captain (D) 3 D.F. Fox also recorded that he felt Wyld lacked power of command.

On 11 April, 1915, he was commended for his zealous and efficient manner in which he had carried out transport escort duties since December, 1914. He grounded Pincher a second time during 1915 and received a lighter admonition from the Admiralty.

On 15 November, 1916, Wyld was appointed in command of the destroyer Nereide.

On 1 June 1917, Wyld was given fourteen days leave in England while Nereide was refitting. He would be re-appointed in command when she re-commissioned in July 1918 and serve through the end of the war.

Post-war

On 10 April, 1919, Wyld left Nereide upon her reducing to reserve. On 7 May he would be appointed to command Serene and for charge of a group of T.B.Ds.. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1919.

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Spindrift on 21 June, 1920.

Wyld was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 November, 1922.

World War II

In August 1939, Wyld was appointed to the Contraband Control Service in Gibraltar.

On 1 December, 1941, he was appointed in command of Sandhurst, vice Hoare-Smith.

Wyld was promoted to the rank of Captain on 3 September, 1945.
