Captain Herbert Algernon Adam, C.B.E., Royal Navy (3 January, 1872 – 27 September, 1920) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life

Adam was the younger son of the Reverend Benjamin W. Adam, D.D., of the Rectory, Bantry, Co. Dublin.[1]

Adam was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 July, 1892.[2]

He married Emily Banner Clough Johnstone on 30 December, 1898.[3]

Adam was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1903.[4]

Adam was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1910.[5]

In September 1911, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Dido.

He was appointed to command the battleship Prince George for manœuvres on 2 July, 1912.[6]

He was appointed as captain of H.M.S. Jupiter in October, 1912.

Adam was appointed as captain of the battleship Vengeance on 9 January 1913.[7]

On 1 May, 1914, he was appointed to command the battleship Queen on 1 May, 1914.[8] He commanded her until June, 1916. She operated with the Fifth Battle Squadron during operations off Gallipoli, where she contributed to shore bombardments. He submitted a report in October 1915 covering the methods employed in bombarding targets which were hard to see from the guns.[9] Adams was superseded in command of Queen in June, 1916.

After a week in command of Prince of Wales, Adam was ordered to return home, but was actually appointed to St. George, additional, to serve as Principal Naval Transport Officer, Salonika. Ordered home in January 1917, no service is indicated in his record until his next appointment, in command of the armoured cruiser Cornwall, dated 5 July, 1917.[10]

He was appointed to command the battleship Neptune on 10 January, 1919.[11]

Adams died "suddenly" on 27 September, 1920 at the age of forty-eight.[1]
