Edward Neville Mortimer
Lieutenant-Commander Edward Neville Mortimer (2 September, 1887 – 14 June, 1924) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Mortimer was born in the Royal Naval Hospital, Hong Kong. Presumably, this means his father was in the service, but he listed his mother as his guardian upon joining the navy in September, 1902.[1]
Mortimer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1909.[2]
Mortimer was appointed in command of the destroyer Surly from 12 August, 1914 through March 1915.[3]
He grounded P17 on 15 May, 1916 and was cautioned to be more careful in future. He was then lent to the Royal Australian Navy from 26 May 1916 for a considerable time. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1917. A 28 July 1918 Court Martial is indicated, perhaps involving H.M.S. Phoenix, which had been torpedoed and lost off the Otranto Barrage on 14 May 1918. He reverted to R.N. service on 13 January, 1921.[4]
He died "suddenly" at London Nursing Home in June, 1924. No hospitalizations are indicated in his service record.
